Man Vs Wild

NOT A BLOG POST TO PLUG DISCOVERY CHANNEL'S SHOW BY BEAR GRYLLS

Some of you might be familiar with this show of an English bloke roaming jungles/desserts/ice cold conditions and pretty much every extreme terrain of this planet showing you techniques on how to survive if you'd get stuck in such a sticky situation.

So by now you'd have caught the rift. It involves sucking tree sap, eating a tapir's anus or chewing on a tree bark, harvesting a sea otters bile as soap. My description might not be the most accurate one but it paints the picture.

Back to the theme of this post. NO i wasnt in any harsh terrain or anything. It involves pretty much the confines of my room while taking a break studying.

So this small episode involves the confluence of my dad visting me last weekend, buying or shall i say impulsive buying of too much fruits particularly persimmons. To be brutally honest not the top of my list in terms of favourite fruits.

So im sure if your familiar with banana's once they ripe the whole bunch decides to go ripe on you and you'd be stuffing yourself with it or banana made 10 ways.

Same thing happened with persimmons. It was ripped or over ripped to the extend that it turned mushy. In the spirit of not wasting food for thousands of African children are starving i decide to give it a go.

Erm texture wise not the most inviting, the dark brownish colour didnt help much either. It resembled healthy looking stool on the Bristol Stool Chart. But it was diabetic-ally sweet.

The innate sense of my inner foodie spurred me on to give it a go. And first strike on the palate wasnt too bad it was like taking plain tea with one too many teaspoons of sugar added. Then it turned unbearable.
Toilet Bowl Mugshot

Mind you i had to go through four of these. Perhaps the only thought that kept me going was my wild imagination thinking that i was in a remote tribe in Africa going through an initiation rite by devouring this magical fruit. And in the spirit of showing great appreciation to my hosts i had to finish it.

But alas by senses kicked in and i had to stop at the last fruit. Gosh the taste still lingers in my mouth!
So that was my small episode of Man Vs Wild. Another possible reason for my courage could probably be the fact that i was hungry.

Facelift?

For followers of this blog the major difference upon landing on this blog would be the change in template. Nothing really shocking, just a change in colour. Not too sure of it either but a good change is the centre column where the words are are now in white. So with the contrasting dark background it actually brings a closer focus to the words as well as the content. (well thats the whole idea behind it anyways)
But anyways still gotta tidy up the labels column which is currently is in a state of total chaotic disastrous mess of melted words heaped up with many letters.

I should be blogging more regularly i know that and i have a calling for that but circumstances in these few months dont allow me to do so. Erm im thinking its gonna take a while before the facelift is completed or it might just be scrapped. I have a few ideas in mind but just got to find the right mood and frame of mind to get down to it. And now im currently very very short of that.

Well if you like the old look drop me a comment, and if you are willing to design a template or have any ideas just drop me a comment.

Google +

There's lots of excitement brewing in the air of social networking recently with particular focus on Google's latest brain child simply name Google +. I wont say its a total revelation or revolutionary but more of an evoultion of social network giants Facebook with a simpler and tidier interface.

Im still figuring my way around things but i cant really see its full potential since its rather quiet at the moment with only a few of my friends using it as well. Cant imagine the excitement when its implemented in full fledge.

So is this going to be another cheap ass rip off of facebook? That would be an understatement. Its like saying is an orange the cousin of an apple going through puberty with its pus faced coloration and rough acne skin?

For now i'll probably see how things play out to be and hopefully google tweaks its interface further for easier usage. If your looking for an invite just leave your email address in the comments box below and i'll get back to you as soon as possible.

IMU's Culinary Underbelly

At the end of the 4th semester for every student in IMU's medical course would be given a choice of a few topics to study as a 3 weeks course. So i tried isolating my mind as far away as i could from medical related topics. But sadly this time round literature wasn't an option so the closest thing to that would have been Nutrition and Dietetics.

Boy was i so sunken deep down with regret each day in class which starts at an ungodly hour of 8am and placing myself through lessons that clashes with principals of any foodie abides too. Learning to count calories, being taught on how to come up with a healthy diet and  acknowledging that my daily diet is enough to last me up to 3 days worth of calories.
One work station, complete with 4 stoves and an oven. Sufficient space for prep as well!

It was awful, torturing and to a certain extend lewd to my eyes and ears that i wanted to jam a pencil into it. But probably the true reason i joined was either to learn how to abuse my calories and have access to IMU's swanky kitchen. More inclined to the latter though.

You might be thinking why does a medical school need such a swanky kitchen worthy of a Michelin Star restaurant. Its what students of Nutrition and Dietetics call their lab. Our term of lab coins from looking at cancerous cells under a microscope where as their's is a cradle of excitement and creativity. Sighs....

So what were tasked to do was to create a dish/ modify it from an existing recipe to make it more healthy in a time of 3 hours. Pretty much like iron chef on a much more amateur level. So i ended up with a group of girls and an indirect alpha male since everyone else knew next to nothing about cooking.

With this in mind the most suitable dish that i could think of was chicken pie. Something hearty, homely and most of all pausible to pull off in a healthy way. I basically followed the usual principals of a chicken pie but substituted butter with margarine, flour with whole meal flour and reduce the amount of salt added and substituted cube chicken stock with pure chicken broth. The original recipe was taken from here.

Chicken Pie in the making.
Talk about passion
There was a total of 8 groups participating 4 from medicine and the other 4 from dentistry. There was a stark contrast between the preparation methods between two batches. Medical students being more sloppy in terms of presentation but placing greater emphasis on taste and the dental side being very handy and artsy with their garnishing.
Left: Goldilocks porridge, green curry, kebabs, artsy fancy fruit "sushi"
Can you spot which one of the above is the handy work of a dental student? pretty obvious init?

Since our chicken pie had more vegetables than chicken in it, i decided to aptly name our dish "Chicken in the Forest" with a tongue in the cheek attitude. If you think thats rad what about "Stove monkeys" as a group name courtesy of yours truly.
Left: making the "forest" Right: Monkeys in action
So what is Chicken in the Forest? In simple non-Michelin star menu terms it reiterates as Chicken Pie with a side serving of Salad and Honey Glazed Apples with Lemon Zest. The only real difficulty would probably be in getting the pastry to rise and to the right consistency. Im as clueless as lost child when it comes to baking.
Garnishing?

Nothing very fancy in terms of garnishing but big on taste =)

Some cold bihun tossed with roasted shrimps and side serving of mango pudding and stuffed potatoes.
Tastes tangy and salty at the same time very nice.

Cake without butter

Sandwich rolls! Creative stuff

Fruit salad and Porridge.
This porridge has a texture that was caught between a risotto and congee. Fruit salad was tasty tho.
Green Curry
This was the bomb. I'd give full salutation to the group which made this with green curry paste made from scratch. Nice spicy kick to it.
Fruit "salad"
Fruit cuts with a base of honey binded oats and muesli. Slightly too dry for me though could have used a little more honey for its oats and muesli.
Seared chicken with brown sauce with a side serving of salad.

A complete 3 course meal.
The one word description of this whole meal prepared by a group of dental students would be Vibrant. In terms of colour of course and it does touch on all the major food groups.

Chicken kebab!
This dish ultimately won. They deserved it tho. Couldnt get enough of it. Was definitely redolent of herbs and spices. Everybody was fighting for a piece of this.

Wasn't aware that points and prizes were to be awarded for this. Am grateful that we came in second. Competition was stiff very stiff.

If i had things my way i'd get michelin to give this one star for presentation.

in shock? i was.

1st place

3rd place
thanks!
If im not mistaken there's a chinese proverb saying in life we should always endure hardship and bitterness before we can truly devour happiness and enjoyment and this was a small example testifying to this. Despite the heavy bludgeoning of proper dietary intake its nice to end with something that i really signed up for. And P.s if everyone had to follow our daily requirement i'd be a good start to rid the world of hunger.

Im on twitter!!!

Yes its my first time announcing that im on twitter to the public. I first registered for a twitter as a much  faster way to filter through feeds and to be able to follow trends of current news in a much more efficient way with its hash tag functions and all.

Still relatively new to this social media platform but climbing up the learning curve steadily no doubt. So follow me on twitter! Probably another reason why im tweeting more frequently is the challenge of condensing 200 characters together as oppose to facebook of word diarrhoea without any Buscopan.

Follow me @briancsyong!

Read a post in Niki Cheong's blog about tweeting and its potential in delivering news in real time.

Gay Bacon Strips!

Apologies for the lack of blog posts. Exams just round the corner, intense stress and drowned in a pile of notes and hours of studies to catch up. But i did manage to spare a few minutes to watch a few youtube videos worth mentioning. Heard of EpicMealTime ? IF not they're a crazy bunch of guys up in Canada doing real serious crazy shit with the food they make.

As mad as some of their recipes sound but underneath it employs the very basic dynamics of cooking in the preparations of their epic meals. So it isnt just all crap bolted together with layer after layer of bacon. One of my true favourites would be fast food lasagna where they ordered 15 burgers from each fast food outlet and combined it together forming 70k worth of calories! How epic's that????

Anyways i stumbled upon a sweet confectionary which i think was similar to the ones used in one of their more recent videos. The guys at EMT are famous for using bacon (alot of it) in every single meal that they prepare. After watching a few video's you'd understand. But this video's meal was made purely out of candies so they substituted bacon with what they called Gay Bacon Strip but it isnt a sexually disorientated porcine form of candy but just a name given by the EMT guys to fruit strips with a different layer of flavours.
Gay Bacon Strips in action! Lots of 'em!

They even made a FB page for it as a spin off.
I found this particular candy in my local tuck shop on campus grounds. Not too sure if i have ever seen it in hypermarkets though. Its called sour power by Fascini. As the name says it, its has a really sour coating with some form of powder(similar to what you'd find on those sour skittles) and after a few bites you'd be able to taste different flavours of sweetness. Im guessing green apple, strawberry, blue berry and a few other flavours.

Damn gotta cut down on watching youtube vids and get back to studies. Proper food posts will resume after my exams early next month. Till then!

Epic Candy diabetes inducing meal! watch it!

The short lived love affair

No dont worry no one of the opposite sex nor the same side was involved here. Just a trusty camera which i borrowed from a friend a few weeks back. Even as reluctant as i was i returned it knowing that it had served me well.

Yeap the Olympus EP-1. Sure it has its obvious faults primarily the lack of a built in flash and the shutter speed of a cow crossing the road. But where it lacks for here it sure does make up in ergonomics with a sturdy steel body as well as the user friendly layout of the buttons. Im no pro photographer but this camera showed me a sip of what professional grade camera can produce packed into a dimension of a compact camera. I used it in for the IMU NTM post.

Yes a tough day for me indeed but this was just a small part of it. Gonna have to think of a new excuse to find a window of opportunity to borrow this again. hmm.....

Speed Blogging!

Writing this post from KLIA's erl transit. Blimey this part of KLIA actually has a pretty good wifi connection provided by YES.
Just got back from Kuching and its already at the end of my one week break.  It was just as if i was busy packing after  the end of the day of uni with that great sense of excitement. Now im already back here and unpacking my stuff as soon as i get back.  It does justify the cliched quote of 'Time waits for no man'.

Was wondering something as i was walking around KLIA after my short lunch how did this airport manage to even win awards when the airport is relatively quiet compared to major airports like Heathrow, JFK and Charles De Gaulle? hmm...maybe you'd might help me shed some light to my inquisition of this eh?

But anyways its always nice to come out to a quiet arrival hall compared to LCCT's packed terminal with tourists of sorts cramped together in a terminal fashioned after a huge hangar.

Damn the trains already started its slow pace before launching into its hyperspace speed. Didnt really know why i actually penned this post but i suppose its good to be back after a short break ready for the final system of the semester the wretched RENAL =S
Best way to travel to and fro the airport, well for me anyways.

This was definetly speed blogging for me, whipped up as fast as it take to make cup noodles. Heh!
Normal food posts will resume shortly. promise.

PS: not an advertorial for KLIA transit or YES either. just penning it as i see it =)
